Program Information:
Banjo-playing composer Jayme Stone follows whimsy rigorously. An unlikely set of circumstances has lent Stone a broader set of reference points than most banjoists, and those early beginnings have influenced his sound, choice of material, and collaborations. It started with the architecture of the banjo, led to a mysterious librarian who stocked his local public library with a vast trove of banjo recordings, and landed him long-lasting lessons with a series of maestros, from Béla Fleck and Tony Trischka, to Dave Douglas and Bill Frisell. A two-time Juno Award-winning banjo player and composer, Stone travelled to Mali to research the origins of banjo music and how it morphed as it came to the Americas on slaving ships. His experiences and relationships with African mentors form the basis of the recording Africa to Appalachia, which won the 2009 Juno Award for Best World Music Album.

Yacouba Sissoko was born in Kita, Mali, and is a master kora player from the Djeli griot tradition. In his career, he has traveled to almost every nation on the African continent, as well as most of Europe, Canada, the U.S. and Australia. He is in demand as one of the best kora players in the world, playing with jazz, Latin and R & B bands as well as traditional African ceremonies. As leader of his own band, Siya, and member of the group Super Mande, Yacouba continues to record with many famous musicians, including the groups Source, Tamalalou and Fula Flute. He is currently making inroads into Western culture touring with Regina Carter, Basya and recording with Harry Belafonte.
